Updated: Aug 1, 2019

There are many differences between Division 1, 2, and 3 when it comes to when and how you can contact or be contacted by coaches. This post will explain all of these differences so you can gain some clarity during this confusing process

*These dates do not include dead periods or quite periods

· Official Visits

--D1

----Junior Year- Allowed beginning September 1. 1 visit per school is allowed, with a maximum of 5 visits allowed.

----Senior Year- Allowed beginning September 1 of junior year. 1 visit per school is allowed, with a maximum of 5 visits allowed.

--D2

----Allowed beginning June 15th of Sophomore year and are unlimited throughout high school years.

--D3

----Sophomore Year- Not allowed

----Junior Year- Allowed beginning January 1st. 1 per school, unlimited number of schools.

----Senior Year- Allowed beginning January 1st of junior year. 1 per school, unlimited number of schools

As you can see the rules get less and less restrictive as the levels decrease. This is because the NCAA is trying to prevent early recruiting by D1 schools whereas D2 and D3 schools tend to wait until later in the process after the D1 schools have made their first move. Kids will most likely choose the D1 schools they receive offers from them so D2 and D3 schools wait to see which kids receive D1 offers and which don’t.
